Nishio Yasuyuki has recently exhibited his unique and massive sculptures and wall hangings in a solo exhibition at Yamamoto Gendai Gallery, a contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo. His sculptures range from an blend of grotesque and provocative women, to buildings, beetles and religious icons. His recent exhibition was appropriately entitled Exoticism, an in-depth look at his Japanese origin in relation to influences of the West. The mixture of Japanese and Western depiction of the female form in his work is in reference to what he calls “Shojo Manga” or Girls’ Comic. Written by Jane Kenoyer
